Words Unlocked 2014 State and Teacher Awards

A huge thank you to the school leaders and teachers who encouraged their students to write and share their work. A special shout-out goes to the Indiana Department of Youth Corrections and its Education Director, Susan Lockwood; 110 students from Indiana’s five youth facilities submitted poems to the competition. We also want to salute the teachers with the highest number of students whose poems moved on to the second round of judging. That list includes Alice Marlow, Jessica Clark and Laura Turner, teachers at Juniper Hills School, located in Idaho’s Juvenile Corrections Center in Nampa, Idaho; Judy Willis, a teacher at Vantage Pointe Learning Center, located in Indiana’s Logansport Juvenile Correctional Facility; and Scott Ryan, a teacher at Three Lakes High School, located in Oregon’s Oak Creek Youth Correctional Center.
